Kelly Rowland states she “tortured” herself for several years over contrasts to her Destiny’s Child bandmate Beyoncé
Throughout the July 14 episode of The Voice Australia, semifinalist contestant Chris Sebastian shared his fear of being compared to his brother, Man Sebastion, who won Australian Idol in2003
Rowland, obviously, can relate. “I know this sensation,” Rowland, a coach on the show, responded over video chat, per CNN “Can you imagine what it resembles being in a group with Beyoncé?”
Rowland performed with Beyoncé for a number of years. The 2 very first teamed up for Girl’s Tyme in 1990 prior to finalizing to Columbia Records as Fate’s Kid in1997 Although you’re most likely to bear in mind Michelle Williams as the third member of the renowned group, she really didn’t join the lineup till three years later on.
The trio won two Grammys prior to dissolving in2006 They briefly rejoined forces for both Beyoncé’s Super Bowl efficiency in 2013 and her Coachella performance in 2018– or, as we like to call it, Beychella.
Rowland informed Sebastian that she remembers running herself in circles trying to set herself apart from Bey. “I would just torture myself in my head,” she stated. “Like, I can’t use this gown because they’re going to state it resembles B. Or, I can’t have a song like that since it sounds too much like B. They’re gon na compare anyways.”
” I would be lying if I said, ‘No, it’s never ever bothered me.’ That’s bull,” she added. “There was an entire years, if I am being totally truthful, a years where it was like the elephant in the room. It was the thing that would constantly be on my shoulder.”
Rowland overcame a few of this discomfort when she released the tune “Dirty Laundry” in2013 “When my sis was onstage, eliminating it like a motherfucker, I remained in infuriated, feeling it like a motherfucker,” she sang. “Bird in a cage, you ‘d never know what I was dealing with. Went our different methods however I enjoyed she was killin’ it. Bittersweet, she was up, I was down. No lie, I feel helpful for her, however what do I do now?”
In an interview with Washington radio station 93.9 WKYS, Rowland exposed Beyoncé listened to the track before it was released– and was “happy” of her. “[Beyonce] was just like, ‘I never ever left,'” Rowland said “Which was so sweet. It was charming. She heard how genuine I was and she was just like, ‘I’m so proud of you.'”
